Basket Weaving Workshop
15 MAY 2021, 11:00AM-2:00PM
WHEN IN DOUBT, WEAVE IT OUT
The art of basketry is ancient, with many different styles and techniques used around the world depending on the materials available.
In this three hour workshop, we will use raffia as the main base with the choice of stitching in either raffia, wool, or cotton, or a combination as you like. Raffia comes from the leaves on the Palmyra palm, native to Madagascar. It is dried and shredded into the strips we will use in this workshop. It is a wonderful material to use and makes for quite a firm basket. There is also the option of adding some wooden beads to your piece if you desire.
Choose your own colours to suit your personality or home colour scheme, and spend a delicious few hours in this wonderful inspiring space with your fellow creators. A group dynamic breeds creativity, so be prepared to really immerse yourself in your artistic flow.
No previous experience is needed, just the willingness to have fun and make something with your own hands.

A bit about your teacher Philippa (Pip):
My first introduction to weaving a basket was in the Pilbara as a 15 yr old on an art camp. One of the teachers showed us how to weave using spinifex, in the tradition of the indigenous tribes in the area. This wonderful experience stayed with me, and as an adult I attended several more weaving courses. I am also an artist, employing many different mediums including acrylic, watercolour, pastel and oil painting, wood burning, fibre art, macrame, silver jewellrey, amongst others. I self ran a creativity retreat in Ubud, Bali in 2019 which encouraged people to open up to new creative explorations, including painting, batik work and silver jewellrey.
Can children attend?
At this time this is an 18+ event.
I’m a total beginner is this right for me?
This workshop is for all levels of basket weavers.
Can I get a refund if I can no longer attend?
You can receive a refund if you inform us 48 hours prior to the workshop.
If I don’t drink or eat anything can I get a discount?
Unfortunately not, most of the price of the ticket comes from covering the price of the guidance from Pip and the materials used.
Can I bring my own food?
We’re happy to cater for any dietary requirements you might have but if you’re feeling unsure about anything feel free to bring something. Your ticket will not be discounted though as the cost covers mostly the kit.
